What we look for

Eight things that hide in solar quotes.

Door-to-door reps and call-center closers know most homeowners won’t read the contract. We do. Here’s what we flag every time.

30%+ dealer fees buried in financing.

Most “1.99% APR” loans bake a 30–50% dealer fee into principal. Your $20K install becomes $30K. We do the math against actual cash price.

Escalator clauses on leases.

Sunrun and similar PPA contracts often escalate 2.99% per year. A $150/mo lease becomes $295/mo by year 25 — $58K total. We surface this in writing.

Wattsmart eligibility check.

Of all the home batteries on the market, only some are eligible for Rocky Mountain Power’s $2,000 Wattsmart rebate. If your quote includes Anker, Bluetti, or another non-eligible battery, you’re leaving $2,000 on the table.

Hardware vs spec match.

Quote says “8 kW system” but the panel count + wattage don’t multiply to 8 kW? Or the inverter is undersized? Or the battery brand is changed at signing? We catch these.

Lease lock-in language.

25-year leases that can’t transfer at home sale. We’ll show you the exact paragraph in your contract that says it.

Tesla rebate timing.

Tesla’s $500 Next Million rebate expires June 30, 2026. If your install date is after, the quote should reflect $500 less, not the same.

Permit and interconnection costs.

Some quotes hide permits + plan-check + AHJ as “miscellaneous.” We tell you the real cost (typically $400–$700) so you know if you’re being padded.

Federal ITC misrepresentation.

The 30% federal residential ITC expired Dec 31, 2025. If your quote dated 2026 still mentions a 30% federal credit, the rep is uninformed or worse.

I started BYOP because I did the math on my own home install in 2023. Found door-knocker companies were charging 30–50% above actual costs to fund commission stacks. I quit my job, got the licenses, and built a no-salespeople installer. I read every quote myself.

FAQ

Common questions.

Yes. Bat reads quotes manually. No upsell, no hard sell. About 1 in 4 people we review end up wanting our quote — but no pressure either way.

Tell us in the form. We’ll still read it and give you negotiation points to take back to your installer. Some of our analyses have helped people get $5K–$10K knocked off Sunrun quotes without switching.

PDF is easiest (email to [email protected]). Paste text into the form below works too. Even just the key numbers (total cost, system size, financing rate) is enough to give you ballpark feedback.

24 hours during M–Sat. We respond by text or email — your choice in the form.

We can still read your quote — the dealer-fee math and lease tricks are universal. We just can’t install for you. Plenty of trustworthy installers in other states; we’ll point you in the right direction.
