Grid-tied solar shuts off during outages by design — even when the sun is out. A battery retrofit keeps your system producing, charges from your own panels through a blackout, and pulls $2,000 from Rocky Mountain Power’s Wattsmart program on the way in. I retrofit any existing system, regardless of who installed it.
Solar panels alone shut off when the grid goes down. A battery fixes that — plus two more things your solar can't do today.
Without a battery, your panels disconnect during outages (required by code). With a battery, your home rides through outages silently and automatically — even in the middle of the night when the sun isn't shining.
Utah's net billing credits exported solar at wholesale rates (~$0.04/kWh) while your evening electricity costs retail (~$0.12/kWh). A battery stores your midday production for evening use — capturing the full retail value of every solar kWh you generate.
Rocky Mountain Power pays you $2,000 flat per battery when you enroll. This rebate applies to retrofits, not just new systems. We handle enrollment paperwork.
We retrofit batteries onto systems from every major Utah installer. You don't need to go back to the company who sold you your panels.
If your installer isn't listed, we almost certainly still cover you. Call and we'll confirm on the phone.
We'll inspect your existing equipment before quoting and tell you exactly which retrofit method fits your system.
We'll pick the right one for your system — but here's how they differ.
Most common. Least disruptive. Keeps your original inverter running.
Cleaner long-term. Required for some older string inverters nearing end-of-life.
We don't take dealer kickbacks. We pick the battery that fits your system, budget, and backup goals — not the one with the best margin for us.
13.5 kWh, 11.5 kW peak. Most integrated retrofit option. Wattsmart-approved.
15 kWh, 10 kW continuous. Strong generator integration if you already have one.
10.5 kWh. Ideal if you already have Enphase microinverters — same app, same ecosystem.
14.3 kWh, LiFePO4. Exceptional value for critical-loads retrofits.
5-180 kWh modular. Flexible sizing if you want to start small and expand later.
10-20 kWh. Wattsmart-approved with premium warranty terms.
Many retrofit customers don't realize Rocky Mountain Power's Wattsmart rebate applies to any new battery enrolled in the program — not just new solar + battery installs. If you're adding a battery to existing solar, you qualify.
No guesswork. No surprise costs. Every step handled by a licensed Master Electrician.
We inspect your existing panels, inverter, and electrical panel. We identify exactly what equipment you have and what retrofit method will work best — AC-coupled or hybrid swap.
Based on your backup goals (whole-home, critical loads, or peak-rate savings) and your existing inverter type, we recommend the right battery brand and size.
We design the integration to NEC 2023 with electrical diagrams, load calcs, and panel schedules. We file city permits and the Wattsmart enrollment package.
Typical retrofit takes 1-2 days. We mount the battery, install the new inverter (if hybrid swap), wire to your existing system, and integrate with your main panel.
City inspector signs off. RMP completes Wattsmart enrollment. Permission to Operate (PTO) typically takes 2-4 weeks.
We power on the battery, run an outage simulation, configure your app, and walk you through everything. Your solar now works when the grid doesn't.

Yes. We retrofit batteries onto systems from any installer, including Sunrun, Vivint, Blue Raven, Auric, Momentum, ES Solar, Go Solar Group, Legend, and any other Utah solar company. We don't care who built your system. We care that your retrofit works correctly and passes inspection.
Not in most cases. We design the retrofit so the new battery sits downstream of your existing inverter and panels, meaning your original equipment warranty stays intact. If your system uses a proprietary hybrid inverter, we'll review the manufacturer's terms before you commit to anything.
Yes. There are two paths: AC-coupled retrofit (we add a battery-ready inverter alongside your string inverter, keeping everything working) or replace the string inverter with a hybrid battery inverter. AC-coupled is more common because it requires less rework. We'll evaluate both options for your specific system.
Yes, as long as the battery model is on Rocky Mountain Power's approved Wattsmart list. Most Tesla Powerwall, FranklinWH, Enphase, and Sonnen units qualify. We handle enrollment paperwork and make sure your retrofit is installed to meet RMP's requirements.
For a standard AC-coupled retrofit: roughly $14,000-$18,000 for a single 13.5 kWh battery installed. Hybrid inverter replacement retrofits run higher ($18,000-$24,000) because the inverter itself gets swapped. The $2,000 Wattsmart rebate comes off the top.
Physical install is typically 1-2 days. Full timeline from signed contract to commissioned battery is 4-8 weeks, mostly due to permitting and utility interconnection review. We file the permits and Wattsmart paperwork so you're not chasing anything.
Only briefly. We need access to your electrical panel and the battery location, plus a final walk-through at commissioning. The rest of the work we can do without you being on site.
Even better — there's no warranty interaction to worry about. We see a lot of systems from out-of-business installers (Legend, Vivint pre-Sunrun, Pink Energy, etc.). We'll document the system condition, engineer the retrofit, and take over as your point of contact going forward.
No salespeople. No pressure. Just a licensed Master Electrician telling you exactly what it'll cost to add backup to the solar you already own.
